Portraits and Landscape Paintings
David Sandell is an award-winning portrait and landscape artist based in the heart of the English countryside, working primarily in oils, pastel and pencil for portrait commissions, original oil paintings and limited edition prints.
Portraiture, Landscape and Seascape Oil Paintings
David’s studio is situated in a village on the border between Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire overlooking the Nene Valley. His landscape oil paintings are inspired by the local countryside and are often based on observations during walks around the River Nene Valley, or South Northamptonshire countryside, where he has shares in a design studio. He is current working on a series of seascapes of the Cornish coastline around Mounts Bay and the Lizard Peninsula. His inspiration comes from observing the changing moods of the sea in all weather. As a younger man he spent some time at sea and the pull of the sea has never left him.
David’s portrait work includes studies of carefully chosen subjects in addition to portrait commissions in oil and pencil.
All oil paintings are on portrait-quality linen mounted on canvas stretchers or fixed to wooden panels.
He can offer guidance on framing where required and often hand-paints his frames to suit the subject matter.
Pencil Portraits
Pencil portraits can be either monotone, coloured pencil/pastel on white or toned paper. Head and shoulder portraits are usually drawn life size.
Oil Portraits
Oil portraits are typically painted life size on portrait linen using the best quality materials. Due to the nature and curing process of oil painting, planning well ahead is very important.
Oil Landscapes
Paintings are available as either original oil paintings or edition giclee prints.
Oil Seascapes
Paintings are available as either original oil paintings or edition giclee prints.
Framing
Guidance can be offered or framing arranged if required for completed drawings and paintings; drawings also require mounts and glass for protection.
Art Workshops
David has experience of running drawing workshops in the USA and UK and currently has a range of workshops locally covering general drawing, life drawing and portraiture.
Materials
He uses the best possible materials for drawings and paintings and has tested and carefully selected these over the years. He paints on linen using oil colours from various brands depending on the pigment. He uses an extensive range of pencils for all purposes and prefers to draw on toned pastel paper.
“Every artist develops a drawing process which differs in some way, whether drawing or painting portraits or landscapes; they may have some elements in common yet use a process which remains unique to them as they continue to develop their art. Like many artists my methods and processes have been influenced by the principles taught by various respected artists. My sincere thanks to all collectors and models for trusting my efforts in pencil and paint.”
